Sovereign Tech Tip 1: Switch to Proton Mail for Email Comms

Encryption is critical to digital hygiene, and thus to digital sovereignty. Given that digital sovereignty is a critical component of national sovereignty, Civil Defence Canada recommends that all of its member switch to a non-American encrypted email provider like Proton Mail. While we understand that encrypted commercial communication tools like Proton Mail are not the absolute best cybersecurity practice, we also recognize that not every member of Civil Defence Canada will have the technical ability to use end-to-end encryption without making use of a third party app?

The Good News?

  1. For reasonable email use and file storage, Proton Mail is absolutely free. There are higher email and storage tiers that are associated with fees but most users will absolutely not need to
  2. Proton Mail is not American. Given that the United States is the greatest threat to Canada, Civil Defence Canada does not recommend that its members and followers make use of American tech services.
